Conformity assessment for length measuring devices

The calibration regulation was previously regulated nationally. A conformity-assessed (MID compliant) length measuring system can now be used in all countries of the European Union. Companies that would like to sell the cables to third parties on the market may only buy length measuring systems that correspond to the requirements of the new measuring device directive in future.

What is a conformity assessment?

The MID (Measuring Instruments Directive) conformity assessment for a measuring system basically replaces the former initial calibration. The EU directive known as MID concerning measuring systems (2014/32/EU) follows the principles of the EU in which international trade represents a basic simplification with the alignment the requirement and mutual recognition of the certificate of conformity. The concept of MID is the regulation of bringing measuring systems into circulation until initial commissioning. The conformity assessment is carried out by a conformity assessment body (e.g. PTB or weights and measures office) and takes place directly at Kabelmat. After successful assessment of the measuring system, as the manufacturer Kabelmat issues a conformity declaration which confirms Europe-wide validity. Then the conformity-assessed machines can be brought into circulation.

What has actually changed?

In addition to correct measurement of lengths, the requirements for logging, transparency and traceability of the measurements have been significantly increased. The important change lies in the demand for permanent and tamper-resistant storage of all measurements. Because all length cutting data must be archived, such as time, date, cut length, counter and measurement ID number. Furthermore, this data should also be visible to the buyer, displayed on a label attached to the pre-cut cable. This provides both the buyer and seller with 100% transparency and traceability, also with individually pre-cut products. New machines from Kabelmat satisfy the requirements of this directive.

When an electronic length measuring system is being used, all cable cuts can be seamlessly and permanently documented via a bulk storage module.

How long does the validity of conformity assessment (calibration period) last?

Electronic length measuring systems with a declaration of conformity are regarded as calibrated until the respective nationally regulated calibration period expires. For Germany, the calibration period for machines on the market is 2 years. Calibration (previously re-calibration) is then the responsibility of the measuring system owner. The regional weights and measures office of the owner is then responsible for calibration. Irrespective of the above, the calibration period ends when the error limit is exceeded or the seals have been prematurely damaged. Other countries may have deviating regulations. These can be found in the applicable national directives.

What about length measuring devices with mechanical counter?

Length measuring devices by Kabelmat with mechanical counter can also be provided with MID, but are only approved for direct sales (e.g. retail trade). There is an unlimited calibration period for these devices.
